Lesson 4 of 4
Positioning That Competes on Relevance, Not Price
When your positioning is unclear, buyers default to comparing you on the one thing they can compare easily: price. This is not because they're cheap. It's because price is the only clear differentiator available when everything else looks the same.
Clear positioning removes price as the primary decision factor. When a prospect reads your positioning and thinks this is exactly what I need from someone who clearly understands my situation, price becomes secondary. They're no longer shopping for the cheapest option — they're assessing whether you're the right fit.
Compete on price and you'll always lose to someone willing to charge less. Compete on relevance and price becomes a secondary concern.
This is the practical value of positioning beyond the marketing theory. It's not just about standing out. It's about changing the basis on which decisions get made — from price comparison to fit assessment. When buyers are assessing fit, they're asking different questions. Not "is this affordable?" but "is this right for me?"
What this means for your Canvas
The Position questions in the Canvas work through exactly this. The goal isn't a clever tagline — it's a clear statement of who you serve, what you help them achieve, and what makes you the right choice for that specific person. That statement becomes the foundation for every piece of copy the Canvas writes.
You don't need to arrive with a positioning statement written. But having thought about the question — why should this specific person choose me — means your Canvas will produce something sharper and more accurate.
