What You Do vs Why They Choose You

When most people describe their business, they describe what they do. "I'm a life coach." "I do financial planning." "I run a marketing consultancy." This is your category — useful for orientation, but not positioning.

What you do tells a prospect what type of service you provide. It doesn't tell them why you, specifically, are the right person to provide it. And that's the question your positioning needs to answer.

Your category tells people what you do. Your positioning tells them why you're the one to do it for them.

What you do: I'm a business coach.

Your positioning: I work with first-generation entrepreneurs who've outgrown their original business model and need a structured path to their next stage — without losing what they've built.

The first statement describes a category. The second describes a specific person in a specific situation — and signals that you understand that situation intimately. For the right person, that's not just relevant. It's a relief.

  • Category tells them what type of help they're getting
  • Positioning tells them this help is specifically designed for someone like them
  • The gap between the two is where most solopreneurs lose potential clients

The shift from category to positioning requires knowing your niche well enough to speak to a specific situation. That's why Module 1 comes first. Your positioning is built on top of your niche — and the Canvas connects both.
